Double Bottom Scanner: Free W Pattern Stocks

This double bottom scanner finds the W-shaped pattern that chart researcher Thomas Bulkowski splits into four types in his Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns: Adam and Adam, Adam and Eve, Eve and Adam, and Eve and Eve. It looks for two lows within 3% of each other after a real decline, then lists stocks still forming the W and those closing above the neckline, from final daily data five trading sessions late. Our double bottom pattern guide explains how traders read each part of the W. Use it as a free double bottom screener for double bottom stocks, before and after the neckline breaks.

Key Takeaways

  • Two lows within 3% of each other, 10 to 60 sessions apart, after a decline of at least 15% and a bounce of at least 10%.
  • Forming: the second low came in the last 10 sessions and the stock is still below the neckline.
  • Breakouts: the first close above the neckline within 30 sessions of the second low, with volume above its 20-day average on final data.

Free cards also require a close above $5, more than $10 million traded on the alert day, a current market cap of at least $2 billion, and they skip likely buyouts: stocks whose price has stayed within 3% for 10 sessions, which usually means a pending deal.

What a double bottom is

A double bottom has two lows at about the same price with a bounce in between. The high point of the bounce is the neckline. When the stock closes above the neckline, the pattern is said to break out. The idea is simple: the stock tested its low twice, held both times, and is now pushing up through the line where earlier buyers had to pay more.

Our rules for the W

We use fixed rules so every match is measured the same way.

  1. Bottom 1 is a pivot low. It is the lowest low of 5 sessions on each side.
  2. A decline came first. The highest close in the 60 sessions before bottom 1 is at least 15% above bottom 1’s low. The W follows a real drop.
  3. The bounce is meaningful. The neckline is the highest high between the two bottoms. It must be at least 10% above bottom 1’s low.
  4. Bottom 2 comes 10 to 60 sessions later. Its low is within 3% of bottom 1’s low, above or below.
  5. No deep undercut in between. No low between the two bottoms falls below bottom 1’s low minus 3%.

Two lists, Forming and Breakouts

  • Forming: Bottom 2 is the lowest low since the neckline session and was made within the last 10 sessions. The stock now closes above bottom 2’s low and below the neckline. The W is taking shape and has not broken out.
  • Breakouts: The first close above the neckline within 30 sessions of bottom 2. On final daily data, 20-day RVOL must also be above 1 (the day’s volume above its 20-day average).

Each list gets its own row of delayed charts above. The cards show how far the close is below or above the neckline, the size of the bounce, the sessions between the two bottoms and, for breakouts, the relative volume. In the member app, Forming sorts by distance to the neckline, so the stocks closest to a breakout come first, and Breakouts sort by breakout % and RVOL.

The neckline is the trigger

The neckline is the level the pattern has to clear. A stock that has not closed above it has not completed the pattern. The chart draws a dashed neckline from the neckline session to the breakout, or to the latest session of the pattern if there is no breakout yet.

Measured targets are a reference, not a promise

Technical analysts often project a measured move: the neckline plus the distance from the neckline down to the lower of the two bottoms. It is a rough yardstick for how far a pattern might travel, not a forecast, and patterns fail, stop short and overshoot. The free page does not publish price levels, so you will not see a target number here; the cards show percentages and the chart shows the W and its neckline.

How to read the chart

The chart draws the W as line segments through bottom 1, the neckline high and bottom 2. Markers show B1 and B2 at the two lows and BO at the breakout. A dashed line marks the neckline.

What the delay means

The free cutoff is five actual exchange trading sessions behind the latest complete daily-data session. Weekends and holidays do not count. Free picks are final-only: we wait for the daily close and complete data, and the page updates automatically from stored final scan results. It never shows forming-candle matches. Charts can extend to the latest final close, but alert markers stop at the delayed cutoff.

History of this list

This list’s own stored history: History starts April 4, 2012 (the history panel with the charts above always shows the current start date). Members can review every stored double bottom scan alert from that date with its chart. This page shows no backtest results: only the Daily Pivot Breakout page shows the Official backtest.

Current scanners and trade tracking

The Financial Tech Wiz Trading Journal shows every double bottom and neckline breakout the day it happens, the stored history with a chart for each one, and trade tracking with performance analytics. Its developing daily scans are labeled preliminary and confirm after the daily close.

FAQ

What is a double bottom?

A W-shaped pattern: a low, a bounce, then a second low near the first. A close above the neckline (the bounce high) completes the pattern.

How close must the second low be?

Within 3% of the first low, above or below.

How far apart are the two lows?

10 to 60 trading sessions.

What is the neckline?

The highest high between the two lows. It must be at least 10% above the first low.

What is the difference between Forming and Breakouts?

Forming means the second low was made in the last 10 sessions and the price has not yet closed above the neckline. Breakouts means the first close above the neckline, within 30 sessions of the second low, with 20-day RVOL above 1 on final data.

Does the free page show a measured target?

No. The free page publishes no price levels. A measured move (the neckline plus the distance from the neckline to the lower bottom) is a reference some traders use, not a promise.

Why are free picks delayed?

Free pages are final-only and show picks five exchange sessions after the scan alert. Members see current matches.

Is a double bottom a buy signal?

No. It is a screening result. We do not promise results.
