Key Takeaways
- RP is our percentile of each stock’s 252-session closing-price return against every other eligible US stock on the same session.
- A stock qualifies with RP of 95 or higher; ties receive the same midrank percentile.
- RP is our own ranking, not the IBD Relative Strength Rating.
Free cards also require a close above $5, more than $10 million traded on the signal day, a current market cap of at least $2 billion, and they skip likely buyouts: stocks whose price has stayed within 3% for 10 sessions, which usually means a pending deal.
How RP is calculated
- Return: the closing price on the signal session divided by the close 252 sessions earlier, minus 1.
- Rank: RP = 100 x (stocks with a lower return + half of the stocks with an equal return) / all eligible stocks.
- Qualify: RP of 95 or higher on the signal session, with at least 253 sessions of clean history.
- Historical RP ranks each date with prices available through that date only.
What the cards show
Each card shows the RP percentile, the 3-month (63-session) return and the stock’s sector, so you can see whether leadership is spread out or concentrated in one group.
Using relative strength with other scans
Relative strength works best as a filter. Leaders that also meet the Minervini trend template or set up a VCP combine strong performance with a constructive chart.
What the delay means
The free cutoff is five actual exchange trading sessions behind the latest complete daily-data session. Weekends and holidays do not count. The page updates automatically from stored final scan results and never shows forming-candle matches. Charts can extend to the latest final close, but signal markers stop at the delayed cutoff.
Current scanners and trade tracking
The Financial Tech Wiz Trading Journal shows every relative strength signal the day it happens, the full history with a chart for each signal, and trade tracking with performance analytics. Its developing daily scans are labeled preliminary and confirm after the daily close.

FAQ
What is a relative strength scanner?
A relative strength scanner ranks stocks by how they performed compared with other stocks, so you can find the market leaders. This one lists stocks in the top 5% by 12-month price return.
Is relative strength the same as RSI?
No. RSI measures a stock’s recent gains and losses against itself. Relative strength compares a stock’s return with other stocks.
Is RP the same as the IBD RS Rating?
No. RP is our transparent percentile of 252-session price returns. IBD uses its own weighting, so the numbers can differ.
