9/21 Daily EMA Crossover Scanner
This 9/21 EMA crossover scanner finds US-listed stocks where the nine-day exponential moving average crosses the 21-day EMA on the daily chart. Bullish and bearish results appear together, using final signals delayed five trading sessions on this free page.
Key Takeaways
- A bullish cross moves EMA9 above EMA21; a bearish cross moves EMA9 below EMA21.
- The scanner finds a new daily crossing event, rather than every stock with one EMA above the other.
- There is no volume filter, extra trend filter or profitability guarantee.

Free view: up to 5 stocks per direction each week, with final signals 5 trading days late, a close above $5 and more than $10 million traded on the signal day. Not every signal works. The journal shows all of them, winners and losers.

Final matches also require price above $5 and more than $10 million in daily dollar volume, calculated as closing price multiplied by final share volume. Developing and after-close preliminary scans in the app keep the price floor and skip volume filters. Choose a week, then select a stock to update the chart beside the results. Charts include all available stored price history; free signal markers and highlighted candles stop at the delayed cutoff.
The board shows four calendar weeks, with up to five unique stocks per direction in each week. A symbol uses its latest qualifying session that week. Dated-match counts can be higher than the sample shown. An empty direction means no qualifying rows in that delayed week; an unavailable message means the history could not be verified.
The exact 9/21 crossover conditions
A bullish match requires yesterday’s EMA9 to be at or below EMA21 and today’s EMA9 to be above EMA21. A bearish match requires yesterday’s EMA9 to be at or above EMA21 and today’s EMA9 to be below EMA21. Equal current values produce no signal.
A stock that crossed bullishly last week and still has EMA9 above EMA21 is not a new bullish match today. This distinction keeps the list focused on changes in the two averages’ relationship. Previous equality is allowed so a move from equal lines into a strict above or below relationship can qualify.
No closing-price-above-both-averages requirement, volume confirmation, sector filter or longer-term moving average test is added. These simple conditions make the results easier to compare with a daily chart configured to the same calculation rules.
How the exponential moving averages are calculated
An EMA gives more weight to recent closing prices. For a length n, its smoothing factor is 2 / (n + 1). After initialization, today’s EMA equals that factor times today’s close plus one minus that factor times the previous EMA. EMA9 therefore reacts faster to recent closing-price changes than EMA21.
We initialize each EMA using the simple average of its first n valid closes, then continue the calculation through the stock’s stored valid history. The scanner and chart use the same initialization policy. They do not repeatedly seed from a short rolling request window, which could shift crossover dates.
At least 22 valid closes are needed to compare the current and previous EMA21. Stocks missing a required session are excluded instead of silently stretching the window. Different chart products can disagree if they use different history starts, seed conventions or corporate-action adjustments. Our moving average setup guide provides context for comparing chart settings.
Daily signals and forming candles
The nine and 21 lengths count daily sessions. They do not mean nine minutes or 21 minutes. An hourly crossover and a daily crossover are different events, even when the line labels use the same numbers. This scanner does not search intraday chart intervals.
In the journal’s developing view, the latest regular-session price supplies the forming daily close. Yesterday’s EMA relationship still comes from finalized history. The developing bar is replaced as prices change, rather than appended repeatedly as extra daily sessions.
A forming bullish cross can disappear before the close if price falls, and a forming bearish cross can disappear if price rises. Preliminary results must be treated as provisional. Although this scanner has no volume gate, the final view still waits for the final daily-data pass.
How to review a crossover
Open the chart to inspect both EMAs and the signal date. Consider whether the market is trending or trading sideways, whether price is already extended, and whether the proposed trade has an identifiable risk level. The crossover itself does not calculate an entry fill, stop loss, target, holding period or position size.
Both direction lists are useful for review, but neither guarantees the next move. Repeated crossings are possible in a choppy range. A slower average can also lag a sharp reversal because it still incorporates older prices. Evaluate any additional rule as part of a complete process rather than assuming the crossing alone is sufficient.
What the delay and history mean
The free cutoff is five actual exchange trading sessions behind the latest complete daily-data session. Weekends and exchange holidays do not count. Missing scan dates do not shorten the delay. The page updates automatically from stored final scan results, and it never includes forming-candle matches.
Charts show the listed signal date and scanner lines. Price bars can extend beyond the delayed signal to a later permitted final close, but scan markers stop at the delayed cutoff. Initial history for these four scanners covers approximately 60 finalized sessions using the currently eligible stock universe. It is not a survivorship-free database of all companies that existed historically.
Current scanners and trade tracking
The Financial Tech Wiz Trading Journal provides current scanner lists, dated charts, trade tracking and performance analytics. Its developing daily scans are labeled preliminary, require a daily candle close for confirmation, and skip all volume qualification filters. Coverage rotates across the stock universe, so the list is not a simultaneous real-time view of every stock.

FAQ
What is the 9/21 EMA crossover?
It is a crossing of the nine-period and 21-period exponential moving averages. This scanner uses daily closing prices and distinguishes a new bullish crossing from a new bearish crossing.
How do I set up the 9 EMA and 21 EMA?
Use a daily chart and add two exponential moving averages based on close, with lengths nine and 21. Check the platform’s initialization and adjustment conventions if a date differs from this scanner.
How do I find an EMA crossover?
Compare the two averages on consecutive sessions. A bullish event changes from EMA9 at or below EMA21 to EMA9 above EMA21. A bearish event uses the opposite inequalities.
What is the best EMA crossover?
There is no universally best pair. Different lengths respond at different speeds, and results depend on the market, costs and complete trade rules. This tool specifically scans the nine-day and 21-day pair.
