Key Takeaways
- Every match passes the Minervini trend template first.
- Price sits within 7% below a 100-session high pivot that is at least 10 sessions old.
- Pullbacks get tighter, lows get higher and volume dries up: the three signs of a VCP.
Free cards also require a close above $5, more than $10 million traded on the signal day, a current market cap of at least $2 billion, and they skip likely buyouts: stocks whose price has stayed within 3% for 10 sessions, which usually means a pending deal.
The exact VCP rules
- Trend template: the stock passes the Minervini trend template on the signal session.
- Pivot: the highest high of the previous 100 sessions, excluding the signal session, set at least 10 sessions earlier.
- Near the pivot: the close is at or below the pivot and no more than 7% below it.
- Higher lows: the lowest low of the last 10 sessions is above the prior 10, and the last 20 are above the prior 20.
- Contraction: the high-to-low range of the last 10 sessions is smaller than the 10 before it, which is smaller than the 10 before that.
- Volume dry-up: average volume of the last 20 sessions is below the previous 20 sessions.
Why the pivot must be 10 sessions old
A high set two days ago is not yet a level the market has tested. Requiring the pivot to stand for 10 sessions means the stock has pulled back and tightened below it, which is the base a VCP breakout comes from.
How to read the chart
Each chart draws the pivot line and the three contraction boxes with their range percentages. Breakouts above the pivot are covered by the Daily Pivot Breakout scanner; a card’s also-matching chips show when a VCP stock also broke out.
What the delay means
The free cutoff is five actual exchange trading sessions behind the latest complete daily-data session. Weekends and holidays do not count. The page updates automatically from stored final scan results and never shows forming-candle matches. Charts can extend to the latest final close, but signal markers stop at the delayed cutoff.
Current scanners and trade tracking
The Financial Tech Wiz Trading Journal shows every vcp signal the day it happens, the full history with a chart for each signal, and trade tracking with performance analytics. Its developing daily scans are labeled preliminary and confirm after the daily close.

FAQ
What is a VCP scanner?
A VCP scanner looks for stocks forming Mark Minervini’s volatility contraction pattern: an uptrend followed by tighter and tighter pullbacks on shrinking volume, just below a pivot.
How does the VCP pattern work?
After an uptrend, a stock pulls back several times, each pullback smaller than the last, while volume dries up. The tightening shows supply drying up before a possible breakout above the pivot.
Which stocks have a VCP pattern right now?
The cards on this page show recent VCP matches from final data, five trading sessions late. Members of the Financial Tech Wiz Trading Journal see each day’s matches after the close.
