Key Takeaways

  • Stage 2 means a weekly close above a rising 30-week SMA with positive Mansfield relative strength versus SPY.
  • The free list shows only Strong Stage 2 stocks: all six quality checks pass.
  • Stages are weekly, so a week in progress is never shown as final.

Free cards also require a close above $5, more than $10 million traded on the signal day, a current market cap of at least $2 billion, and they skip likely buyouts: stocks whose price has stayed within 3% for 10 sessions, which usually means a pending deal.

How stages are assigned

  • Weekly bars come from daily bars; the 30-week SMA uses weekly closes, and its slope is the change over the last 4 weeks.
  • Mansfield relative strength compares the stock to SPY: the stock/SPY ratio versus its own 52-week average.
  • Stage 2: weekly close above the 30-week SMA, slope above +1% and Mansfield above 0. Stage 4: close below the 30-week SMA and slope below -1%.
  • Otherwise the stock is flat: Stage 3 after a Stage 2, Stage 1 after a Stage 4.
  • A stock needs at least 60 completed weeks of history.

The six quality checks

Strong Stage 2 also requires: the rising 30-week average, a daily close above the 50-day SMA, a breakout week in the last 4 weeks with at least twice the prior 10-week average volume, higher highs and higher lows over 10 weeks, outperformance of SPY and of the stock’s sector ETF, and a close within 10% of the 104-week high (little overhead supply).

Stage 2 versus the Minervini trend template

Both look for established uptrends, but they measure them differently: stage analysis works on weekly bars and a 30-week average, while the Minervini trend template scanner uses daily 50, 150 and 200-day averages and the 52-week range. Many leaders pass both.

What the delay means

The free cutoff is five actual exchange trading sessions behind the latest complete daily-data session. Weekends and holidays do not count. The page updates automatically from stored final scan results and never shows forming-candle matches. Charts can extend to the latest final close, but signal markers stop at the delayed cutoff.

Current scanners and trade tracking

The Financial Tech Wiz Trading Journal shows every stage 2 stocks signal the day it happens, the full history with a chart for each signal, and trade tracking with performance analytics. Its developing daily scans are labeled preliminary and confirm after the daily close.
