Free view: the 5 liquid breakouts with the biggest gain each week (close above $10, more than $50 million traded on a typical day), with signals 5 trading days late. Not every breakout works, and these are the best of each week. The journal shows all of them, winners and losers.

What is a daily pivot breakout?

A pivot high is a swing high on the daily chart: a day whose high is above the highs of the 5 days before it and the 5 days after it. Because it needs those 5 later days, a pivot high is only confirmed a week after it forms. Until price gets back above it, that level marks where sellers last won.

A daily pivot breakout is the first daily close above the most recent confirmed pivot high. Using the close instead of the intraday high filters out many of the quick pokes above resistance that fade by the end of the day.

How the breakout scanner works

Every trading day the scanner checks the US-listed stocks and ETFs in the journal’s database and keeps the ones that pass all of these rules:

  • Breakout: the daily close crosses above the last confirmed pivot high (5 bars on each side).
  • Momentum: a 100-day rate of change of at least 40%, or a 100-day EMA that rose at least 25% over the last 100 days.
  • Volume: relative volume above 1, so more shares traded than the 20-day average.
  • Price: a close above $5.
  • Liquidity: more than $10 million traded on the breakout day.

The journal also shows whether SPY is above its 100-day average. Breakouts tend to work better when the market trend is up, which is why the journal shows it next to every scan.

The scanner runs every trading day and posts the day’s breakouts shortly after the market closes. This page updates on its own every trading day.

How to read the breakout scanner results

  • Weeks: pick a week to see its breakouts. The free view shows the 5 with the biggest gain since the breakout, among stocks closing above $10 with more than $50 million traded on a typical day.
  • Sort: switch between biggest gain and breakout date.
  • Gain since breakout: the move from the breakout-day close to the latest final close. It is not a trade result: the system also uses exit stops.
  • Charts: candles colored by momentum (green when both the rate of change and the EMA slope are bullish), the green pivot-high line, the latest pivot low, the breakout arrow and the system’s exit stops: a pivot-low trail and a 20% trailing stop.

New breakouts reach this page 5 trading days after they happen, and the free view shows each week’s strongest names. Not every breakout works: the journal lists every one, winners and losers, the day it happens.

Daily Pivot Breakout Scanner FAQ

What is a daily pivot breakout?

A daily pivot breakout happens when a stock closes above its last confirmed pivot high on the daily chart. A pivot high is a day whose high is above the highs of the 5 days before it and the 5 days after it, so it is only confirmed 5 days later. The breakout counts on the close, not on an intraday poke above the level.

What filters does the breakout scanner use?

Besides the close above the pivot high, a stock needs momentum (a 100-day rate of change of at least 40% or a 100-day EMA slope of at least 25%), volume above its 20-day average, a close above $5 and more than $10 million traded that day. The journal also shows whether SPY is above its 100-day average, a simple read on the market trend.

Is this breakout scanner free?

Yes. This page shows the 5 liquid breakouts with the biggest gain from each of the last 4 weeks, with signals 5 trading days late. Members of the Financial Tech Wiz Trading Journal see every breakout the day it happens, the full history back to 2000 and a chart for every signal, with a 7-day free trial.

Can I use the indicator on TrendSpider?

Yes. TrendSpider traders can add the Daily Pivot Breakout indicator to their charts on TrendSpider for free. See our custom trading tools page for the link and setup.

When does the scanner update?

The scanner posts each day's breakouts shortly after the market closes. This page updates on its own every trading day.

What does "gain since breakout" mean?

It compares the latest final close with the close on the breakout day. It shows how the breakout has done since the signal, not a trade result: the system also uses stops, and the charts show its pivot-low and 20% trailing stops.

Should I buy every breakout?

No. Many breakouts fail, and this page is educational information, not investment advice. Use the results as a watchlist, check the chart, size positions to a stop you can live with and test the rules before you trade them.
