2 Daily Pivot Breakout Winners Worth Studying: CDE and SLV

CDE and SLV were two of the cleanest metals trends I have seen from the Daily Pivot Breakout tools. Both breakouts came out of long bases with strong momentum as the metals bull run kicked off, then the Daily Pivot Breakout Pro trailing stop kept each trade open until the trend started to break.

Winners are worth studying because a small number of outsized moves can drive a huge portion of long-term performance in trend following. That matters even more for a strategy with a win rate below 50%: the goal is to keep losses small, capture the big trends when they appear, and avoid cutting those rare winners short.

2 Metals Breakout Winners Worth Studying

  • CDE: Coeur Mining, precious metals mining
  • SLV: iShares Silver Trust, silver

CDE: Coeur Mining

  • Daily Pivot breakout on May 27, 2025: CDE cleared a multi-month base with strong momentum as the metals bull run accelerated. The Daily Pivot Breakout Pro trailing stop kept the trade alive until October 21 and captured roughly 119%.
  • Bull case: Coeur had just added the high-grade Las Chispas silver-gold mine, while rising gold and silver prices gave the business powerful operating leverage. Quarterly revenue climbed from about $305 million in Q4 2024 to $481 million in Q2 2025 and $555 million in Q3.
  • Bear case: A miner can move harder than the underlying metals, but it also carries operational, permitting, labor, cost, and country risks. A metals reversal or trouble integrating Las Chispas could have broken the trend long before the trade had time to compound.

SLV: iShares Silver Trust

  • Daily Pivot breakout on November 28, 2025: SLV broke above the all-time high set in 2011 after a base that lasted roughly 14 years. Both momentum filters were active and the candles were green as the signal fired, while the trailing-stop exit on January 30 captured 41.90%.
  • Bull case: The breakout arrived during a powerful silver run supported by a structural supply deficit and industrial demand tied to AI infrastructure, autos, and power grids. SLV gave the trade direct exposure to silver without adding the company-specific execution risk of a miner.
  • Bear case: The move became parabolic, with SLV reaching $109.83 on January 29 before closing at $75.44 the next day. That reversal is a blunt reminder that a fast gap can jump through a trailing-stop level and give back a large part of an open gain.

What These Two Trend-Following Trades Teach

The first lesson is that the best breakouts often start with patience. CDE built a multi-month base, while SLV spent roughly 14 years below its 2011 high before finally clearing it. A longer base does not guarantee a winning trade, but it can make the eventual break much more meaningful when momentum confirms it.

The second lesson is that the strategy is not trying to predict how far a move will go. It enters when strong momentum aligns with a breakout, then stays with the trade until the trend breaks. Both momentum filters were active on SLV when it cleared the 14-year base and its 2011 high, which is exactly the kind of alignment I want to see.

The third lesson is that a trailing stop is designed to capture the main part of a trend, not sell the exact top. CDE and SLV both gave back open gains before their exits, and SLV’s one-day collapse made that trade-off especially visible. The payoff is staying in long enough for a +119% or +41.9% move to offset a much larger group of small losses.
